Purdue University’s Marc and Sharon Hagle Hall has been recognized with the 2026 U.S. Local Leadership Project Award for Indiana by the U.S. Green Building Council. The award recognizes projects that advance high-performance design and contribute to more sustainable, resilient built environments.
School spirit and Boilermaker pride have been shaped by Purdue Bands and Orchestras’ musical talent for more than 130 years. For much of that time, the program operated across multiple buildings, with few and limited spaces to rehearse, perform, and gather. Hagle Hall brings that experience together, creating a dedicated home for the program on a tight site and fulfilling a vision more than 15 years in the making.
The facility provides acoustically tuned rehearsal spaces, flexible performance areas, and places to connect between sessions. It supports the daily discipline of the program while strengthening the sense of community that surrounds it.
LEED Gold certified, Hagle Hall accomplishes the following:
- 36 percent more energy-efficient than a baseline equivalent, saving Purdue more than $15,000 a year in operating costs
- 47.8 percent energy cost savings versus code
- Predicted Energy Use Intensity of 86.3 kBtu/sf/yr against a baseline of 130.8
- Embodied carbon intensity of 393 kg CO2e/m² for the structure and enclosure
- 75 percent of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfills
- More than 90 percent of individual occupant spaces with individual lighting controls
Numbers like these are difficult to achieve in any building, and harder still in a performing arts facility. Acoustic isolation, large rehearsal volumes, and tight envelope control all pull against energy performance. Realizing this level of performance took coordination across every discipline, and a client willing to invest in the long view.
Browning Day is grateful to be part of the team behind a project that strengthens both program and place while making significant strides in building performance and sustainability. Thank you to the USGBC for this recognition.
