Guiding Principles for Westfield’s Downtown Transformation

Informed by community conversations and data-driven analysis, the master plan identified several foundational strategies that help shape a welcoming, walkable, and memorable downtown for Westfield.

1. Determine Critical Development Types
   Identify catalytic development opportunities to incentivize a shift to an urban center core. Mixed-use hubs, civic and cultural venues, natural amenities and residential density where it’s most impactful.
2. Create Visual, Functional & Programmatic Connections
   Seamlessly link one urban space to another through cohesive design, active programming, and intuitive wayfinding.
3. Mind the Edges & Moments of Welcome
   Design inviting gateways and transitions that feel soft, accessible, and human-scaled.
4. Be Intentional About Density
   Strategically blend density by district to balance vibrancy with livability.
5. Capitalize on Legacy Green Spaces & Expand Tree Canopy
   Protect existing open spaces and waterways while introducing new green infrastructure.
6. Prioritize Engaging Pedestrian Routes
   Connect where people live or park to interesting venues through safe, attractive, and memorable walking paths.
7. Create Public Realm Elements That Evoke Emotion
   Design plazas, art installations, and gathering spaces that encourage positive experiences and lasting memories.
8. Architectural Character & Quality Living Options
   Promote distinctive architecture and housing choices that reflect Westfield’s identity while meeting modern needs.

At the center of the Bank Block is the Westfield Front Lawn urban plaza space. This is envisioned as a large urban lawn where a variety of uses combine for a vibrant, active space.

The new Main Street includes design features that provide the safe, comfortable pedestrian environment. Landscape buffers provide shelter for outdoor dining. An additional row of street trees can be accommodated in the wider portions of the roadway.

Gently winding through the heart of Downtown, Grassy Branch is a thoughtfully enhanced and revitalized creekway that creates a seamless connection between people and nature.

Crisscrossing the creek are a series of trails, pathways, boardwalks, and promenades. These pathways come in a variety of materials and textures, allowing users of the creekway to experience the creek in new and unique ways each visit.

A History Walk guides residents and curious visitors along a path that explores the rich history of Westfield. The Walk starts in Grand Junction Plaza, with wayfinding signage guiding people along the path before completing the journey at the Historic Block. Sculptures, art, and other interpretive and historical markers are to be incorporated at key moments along the history walk. These highlight important historical moments and spaces in the City.

Anchoring the central public space in the Carnegie Plaza is an interactive art installation that highlights the rich stories and history of the City.
